LPD, FSC join forces to teach defense

This semester's wellness clinic taught Florida Southern students valuable self-defense tactics, instructed by the Lakeland Police Department's Training Division. Retired officer Mike Arbogast works with LPD part-time. In his 20 years of service, he worked with the SWAT team for 12 years and spent time in Iraq teaching defensive tactics to police departments.

Athletes gather 'with glowing hearts'

The 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver began with record-breaking, tragedy and controversy. The opening ceremony was full of both excitement and sorrow after the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili. The 21-year-old athlete lost control at the Whistler Sliding Centre, flying off the track and colliding with a metal pole during a practice run the morning of the opening ceremony.

The Florida Southern Board of Trustees is one of the organizations that has a huge impact on student's lives. "The Board's role in any student's education is quite substantial. For instance, in the past, the board has passed plans for freezing tuition," SGA president Corey Self, said.

More bicycle racks planned for campus

A notice from Community Living informed students on Feb. 1 that Safety officers would cut the locks off of any bicycles not secured to a bicycle rack, despite the fact that not all buildings have racks. The Safety office hopes to keep students from chaining bicycles to trashcans, traffic signs, light posts and other fixtures.

Online TV trend is popular among students

Watching TV shows and movies online has become increasingly popular with the ability to watch for free. "I definitely watch about an hour of TV on Mondays and I guess I watch maybe 2.5 hours a week because I watch before I go to sleep," sophomore Reilly Burke said.

Health care remains a controversial issue

American health care has seen major changes in the past year. However, the average college student doesn't understand the health care reforms. Doctors in America work under two different health plans, which differ in cost and access, Health Management Organizations and Preferred Provider Organizations.

Plowman strong in mind, body and sole

When Dr. Ed Plowman rushes into a classroom at Florida Southern College, he looks like your average professor. Nothing fancy; jeans, a polo, a stack of graded tests. He is probably best known for his Baseball and American Society course. What many students and faculty don't know is that he is also an avid marathon runner.

The dedicated RA

Sam Tyburski is not the most involved student on campus. She says that she has friends who are far busier than her on a daily basis. She needs time to collect herself and get her thoughts straight-otherwise she would go crazy. Still, she takes on being a resident advisor and a Southern Ambassador, as well as working with TZeDeK, a social justice group on campus and organizing the Spanish Club.

Harris' blessed art

"No one is perfect while striving to reach God," KeTia Harris said to her best friend Nadia Rumbolt while sitting at a round table with background noise of students laughing and forks touching plates. This was the lecture of the day Harris gave to all the different type of individuals that were sitting around the table eating.

Kaufmann looks forward to her future

Kaufmann looks forward to her future

Senior Lauren Kaufmann plans for continued education and a career in perfecting children's books. After graduating from FSC, Kaufmann plans to attend graduate school and ultimately become an editor of children's books. "I'd like to be involved in publishing children's books or editing in any capacity," Kaufmann said.

Mycoskie speaks to FSC students at Convo

Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS Shoes, spoke at Convocation on Feb 17 to talk about his organization and what the students of FSC can do to help those in need. Junior Amanda Glickman suggested the idea that Mycoskie speak at Convocation to the Convocation Coordinator Mike Crawford.
