Change is a good thing for FSC

So many changes and so many new things happened over this summer and are still continuing to occur even though the school year has began. Students are loving the changes, as most cater to their requests (or complaints) made in the past year.

The most visible changes are the work being done on the esplanades, finally coming back from the hiatus of building Frank Lloyd Wright's waterdome, and doing more than just push dirt around at the lakeside residence halls. We are thrilled to see all of these projects finally coming together, but wondering why more work was not done over the summer to be ready for the school year.

The cafeteria looks amazing - we are all praising our wonderful donor. It is nice that she has taken a liking to our school and made contributions that really affect the students at Florida Southern, rather than "beautification" projects. Although it would probably be classified as "beautifying" the cafeteria, the changes being made were necessary, as it was previously extremely outdated. Everyone might be most interested to see which tables the baseball players or sororities or fraternities will claim as their own.

"Freshens," as it is being called is surrounded by hype, and it will be nice to find out if it was all worth it once it is in place. The healthier options will be appreciated by all, and no one will have "nacho-breath" again. This is another change that we are eagerly awaiting the completion of, and one that we will gladly wait for.

The "Moc Mart" has even had its own upgrade. More options are available, both more practical and more healthy. Again, the administration answered the requests of the students by adding these options and it does not go unnoticed. Speaking of hearing the student voice - all are in favor of the allowance to use swipes in Tutu's this year.

Even more food options were added with the grill masters in the Ordway area. The smell is delectable and the idea is a good one. We can see this being a hit once more people discover it - hotdogs and hamburgers cooked fresh daily in front of your eyes, add chips and a drink, all for one swipe.

In line with the concern for safety at our school and the recent attack at Virginia Tech, our school has added a PA warning system. In addition to the warning system, they have also added the technology of emergency text messaging. Students can sign up online to receive text messages about critical situations. These new features are sure to make students feel much safer on campus.

The administration, along with answering the calls of the students, is becoming more noticeably involved with the students this year. Whether it is something little like offering directions, granola bars and water to students on the first day of classes or Dean Thompson's "Dash with the Dean," they are certainly getting their faces out there and really connecting with the students.

Maybe what we are trying to say is a big thanks to listening to us - we will continue to voice our opinions if you will continue to listen.
