The theatre department will open "Noises Off" this weekend, a farcical play within a play. Clockwise from top: Joie Bucalo, Justin Vanden Heuvel, Cortney West, Ryan Marsico, Lacey Brown, Andrew White, Krista Miller and Seth Spencer.

The time has come for Florida Southern College's theater department to present this semester's first production entitled "Noises Off," which is being directed by Paul Báwek.

"Noises Off" is what people in the theater world refer to as a farce. The plot involves a play occurring within a play.

The title "Noises Off," comes from a term in the world of theater. "Noises Off" is a stage direction that refers to specific sounds that are supposed to be heard from off stage.

The entire play of "Noises Off" is a production about the ups and downs of a particular traveling theater group struggling to put on a production called "Nothing On." The show opens with the cast of "Nothing On" going through their final dress rehearsal and experiencing mishaps and mayhem.

Most of the "Noises Off" cast members portray dual roles - an actor, as well as a character in "Nothing On." Sophomore Cortney West plays Dotty Otley and Mrs. Clackett. Garry Lejeune and Roger Tramplemain are played by senior Ryan Marsico, Brooke Ashton and Vicki are played by sophomore Krista Miller, Frederick Fellowes and Philip Brent are played by senior Justin Vanden Heuvel, Belinda Blair and Flavia Brent are played by senior Joie Bucalo and Selsdon Mowbray and the burglar are played by freshman Seth Spencer. Andrew White acts as Lloyd Dallas, the director of "Nothing On." Sophomore Lacey Brown portrays Poppy Norton-Taylor and Tim Allgood is played by freshman Carlos Leon.

As the play progresses to Act 2, the audience is given the chance to see what is going on behind the scenes between the cast members. In Act 3, everything for the actors and actresses of "Nothing On" begins to go horribly wrong as they struggle to finish the show.

The cast members try to disguise all of catastrophes that occur but by doing so, all of the problems become compounded instead of getting fixed.

Michael Frayn, the original director and writer of "Noises Off," is an accomplished and successful fictional novelist and play writer. Some of Frayn's novels include "Spies," "Towards the End of Morning" and "Headlong," but he is best known for "Noises Off."

The FSC theater department will be presenting "Noises Off" in Buckner Theatre as a part of the college's Festival of Fine Arts. Tickets are free for FSC students, faculty and staff.

The productions will be Sept. 27 - 29 and Oct. 4 - 6 at 7:30 p.m. Matinees will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7. During Family Weekend, FSC families get in free with their student.

Call the Buckner Box Office at 680.3089 Monday through Friday between 2 and 6 p.m. to make a reservation for the performance of your choice. The box office will also be open the afternoon and night of the performances.
