Things in the world of football have greatly changed since my last column. Who knew that eight out of the top 25 teams in the country would be defeated on the same weekend? The term "upset" is used for that reason; anything can happen in college football on any weekend. After "upset weekend" came "showdown weekend" with only two major upsets as the No. 2 ranked University of Southern California Trojans suffered defeat at home against the unranked Stanford University Cardinals in what was the second biggest upset this season, after the No. 5 University of Wisconsin Badgers going down against the University of Illinois Fighting Illini.
The best game from "upset weekend" was the No. 18 University of South Florida Bulls defeating the Mountaineers at home in primetime. While West Virginia was favored in the game, the advantage was with the Bulls from the opening kickoff as USF used the fan support from their sellout crowd to earn the upset. Despite several turnovers in a sloppy game, junior quarterback Matt Grothe and the Bulls defense stopped the Mountaineers speedy run game, led by Heisman Trophy candidates junior quarterback Pat White and junior running back Steve Slaton.
The best game from "showdown weekend" was the No. 1 ranked Louisiana State Tigers at home against the No. 9 University of Florida Gators. Both teams faced off in what was an evenly matched contest for most of the game.
In the end, the Gators' inexperience and youth on defense, questionable clock management by Florida head coach Urban Meyer and several "gutsy" calls by LSU head coach Les Miles gave the Tigers a narrow victory. Both teams may meet again in Atlanta to play for the Southeastern conference title later this season.
Major games to watch during the weekend of Oct. 11-13 are No. 1 LSU against the No. 17 University of Kentucky Wildcats, the No. 19 Badgers against Penn State, the No. 11 University of Missouri Tigers against the No. 6 Sooners, the No. 15 University of Cincinnati Bearcats against the University of Louisville Cardinals, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets against the University of Miami Hurricanes, the No. 5 Bulls against the University of Central Florida Golden Knights and the No. 22 Auburn University Tigers against the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.
