The Monster Energy Drink Company has recently decided to sponsor Florida Southern's chapter of Sigma Chi. This is Monster's way of promoting their drink in a new way.

"We have sponsored fraternities and sororities on over 300 college campuses across the U.S. and Canada," said Monster correspondent Harmony Hays. "The program was instated to help build brand awareness to the college consumer."

"I was at a Sigma Chi convention in San Jose, Calif. this summer and Monster had sign ups for their new promotion," said senior Mike Miller. "I immediately put [the] Epsilon Sigma chapter on the list."

The promotion comes with perks like Monster brand banners, signs, stickers, and other items. Sigma Chi also gets 25 cases of the Monster energy drink delivered to the house every month, and they get to specify what flavors they want.

"Monster Energy offers five Personalities: Regular, Lo-Carb, Khaos, M-80, and Assault," said Hays. "Monster Energy now offers JAVA Monster (Big Black, Mean Bean, Loca Mocha)." JAVA Monster is a chilled coffee based drink.

The only thing Sigma Chi has to do for the sponsorship is write a paragraph twice every month stating what the fraternity has done with Monster so far, and what they plan to do in the future. They also send in pictures of events with the Monster paraphernalia to prove that they are promoting it.

"It took us a little while to convince the school to let Monster sponsor Sigma Chi because the school is very focused on the Wellness Initiative," Miller said. "I support Florida Southern College's Wellness Initiative, but I believe that the students have a choice when it comes to their beverages. We offer Monster at all of our functions, but we also have an alternative beverage in case someone does not want to drink an energy drink. We are very honored to have the opportunity to represent Monster. You will be seeing more and more of it throughout the year."

"I think is an acquired taste, but a lot of people seem to like it," commented junior Jenny High.

"Monster is really handy to have around especially when you stay up for an all-nighter," said sophomore Will Dayton.

"It's a good situation for Sigma Chi and Monster," said junior Josh Kahl. "They sponsor us and it attracts students and faculty. It's also good for [Monster] because they are promoting their product where they normally couldn't."
