Everyone currently involved in the nursing program at Florida Southern College, including many alumni, celebrated the program's thirtieth anniversary on Oct. 19, with featured speaker Dr. Jo Manion.
Dr. Larry Campbell and Dr. Richard Burnette established the program in 1977. The program opened with merely two students. Over the years, however, more and more nursing professors and leaders were incorporated into the program.
In 1999, Dr. Sheila Marks led a team, including Virginia Dory, Marva Kear and Dr. Anne Stewart, through a self-study process for the program to become accreditated. Thanks to this team, FSC was received accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) in 2000. It was re-accredited in 2006.
Today, FSC's nursing program offers many options for nursing majors. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or BSN, is offered for those interested in becoming a Registered Nurse. The RN to BSN program is for students who have received diplomas and are currently licensed as an RN by the Florida Board of Nursing, but who would like to receive their BSN. FSC also offers a master's degree program for nursing in order for someone to become a nurse educator or clinical nurse specialist.
To add to the program, the Joe K. & Alberta Blanton Nursing Building is to be opened in the summer on 2009. It will consist of a high-tech nursing skills lab and classrooms.
