The Florida Southern chapter of Alpha Chi Omega just recently put on their Luminary Project for their philanthropy. It was the sorority's largest philanthropy event of the year, and they raised $1,500 for the Peace River Center for victims of domestic violence. At the same time, Healthy Campus Coalition hosted the "Take Back the Night" event, which was also to support victims of domestic violence.
"Take Back the Night" was held on Oct. 9 in the Danforth Chapel. After a short opening of prayer, two FSC students, two people from the Talbot House and a woman from Peace River told their own personal stories that pertained to domestic violence.
After the service, everyone was welcome to walk down towards the lake. Alpha Chi Omega placed the luminaries they sold around the lake in memory of those who have been or who are still going through domestic violence. The luminaries were made with white paper bags filled with one tea light each and some sand to hold down the bags from the wind. Aside from the few candles that went out and the few bags that accidentally set fire, the project ran smoothly and just as planned.
