The new fight song by senior Daniel J. Rindt, president of the student government association at Florida Southern College, is only a small symbol of the school spirit that students have at FSC.
Student Life is responsible for an event called Red Friday. This event's purpose is to promote school spirit among FSC students and bring the school together on every Friday. Students, staff and faculty are all encouraged to show their pride by wearing FSC T-shirts and sweaters or any red shirts, sweats, hats, red and white sneakers, and jewelry.
For those students that do participate, such as FSC senior Leah Gustavson, many enjoy the event.
"I like Red Friday because it builds school spirit among its students and allows them to feel like they can participate in a school-wide event even if they are not necessarily involved on campus, such as athletics or in a club," Gustavson said. "Everyone has red clothes."
However, not all students participate, sophomore Margaret Wooten explained, "No, I do not wear red on Red Fridays. It's not because I do not like the idea of school pride, I just forget."
Many other students stated that they would like to see more reminders around campus to do wear their school colors.
"Student life needs to advertise more through table decorations, posters and by word of mouth like other clubs do such as ACE when performers come to campus," said freshman Donya-Faye Wix.
"All club members should wear red as an example for the rest of the students at FSC," Wix said. "The only way I know about it is because I am in SGA."
"I think it's a really good idea but not that many people participate in it," said senior Gita Drew. "The school needs to have more school spirit especially because we do not have a football team."
Junior Richard Linck said he plans to begin celebrating Red Friday now "because I just got a totally sweet red shirt at MOC Madness, and now I'm the most spirited fan!"
FSC apparel is also available for purchase in the bookstore between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
