Lady Moccasins off to strong start start in defense of their national championship

The FSC Lady Mocs golf team is hoping to reclaim their title as national champions, and have come out of the gate strong - winning their first tournament of the year in which they played their starters.

The Lady Mocs came out firing in their first tournament and took home a 19-stroke victory with a combined team score of 587.

"We started the year off with a win in Phoenix that was our best tournament and we hope to continue our success throughout
the spring," said Coach Robbie Davis.

Senior Lindsay Bergeon tied for first place in the tournament and currently has the third best average on the team.

So far the Lady Mocs' golf team is 25-3 in matches and has finishes of first, fourth, first, and second in the tournaments in which their starters played. One main reason for their success is that they have all of their starters from last year's national championship team back.

Junior Heather Burgner currently leads the team in average with a 74.50 average and sophomore Kim Ulander is a close second with a 75.00 average.

The Lady Mocs have had at least two top-25 finishers in every tournament in which the starters played. In three of those four tournaments, the entire team finished in the top 25, and in one of those three every starter finished in the top 18.

The high scorers for the Mocs in each of the tournaments were Lindsey Bergeon, who finished first in the Grand Canyon
Invitational; Heather Burgner, who finished No. 10 in the Nova Southeastern Invitational and finished third in the Stetson
Invitational; and Kim Ulander who tied for first in the Saint Leo Invitational.

"We hope to repeat in this year's national golf championship, we have all returning starters from last years team plus some very good freshman that will also contribute," said Davis.

Men's golf team hopes to live up to title as top team coming into 2007-2008

The Mocs men's golf team started its season out strong by finishing second at the Coker Invitational, but has struggled since. They haven't finished higher than fourth at any of their other three tournaments.

The Mocs, voted on by the Golf World/Nike Golf preseason Division II coaches' poll were ranked as the top team coming into the 2007-2008 season. They have not finished first in a tournament yet this season,
but not all is bad for the Mocs.

Their current record is 32-10 in match play, showing that this is not a team to take lightly despite their poor tournament play.

The highest finish of any Moc in the tournaments they have played so far is second by sophomore Matt Stauch, who placed at their latest tournament, Rollins' Invitational, where the team as a whole finished No. 4.

The future is looking bright for the Mocs - not only have they started moving up in the standings since finishing thirteenth
at the Coca-Cola Classic, but their top three golfers, in terms of average, are sophomores or lower.

Sophomore Danny Evelyn has the second best average with a 73.90 and Stauch has the third with a 74.36 average. University
of Florida freshman transfer Jude Eustaquio leads the team in average with a 72.36. He placed No. 6, 10 and 8 in tournament
play.

The Mocs have only had two top 20 finishers in tournaments twice. Danny Evelyn finished third and Jude Eustaquio finished No. 10 at the Coker Invitational, and Matt Stauch finished second while Danny Evelyn finished No. 19 at the Rollins
Invitational.

The top scorer for the Mocs in each tournament was, Danny Evelyn, finished third at the Coker Invitational, Jude Eustaquio,
finished sixth at the Coca-Cola Classic and eighth at the Nova Southeastern Invitational, and Matt Stauch, finished second at the Rollins Invitational.

The Mocs will have to play better during the second half of the season if they want to unseat Barry as the defending national
champions.
