Fraternities Sigma Chi and Alpha Gamma Rho battled it out at the intramural basketball game in the Wellness Center gym. Sigma Chi was victorious, and dedicated the game to Michael Szwed, a former Sigma Chi brother who died last month.

Florida Southern College and Sigma Chi fraternity senior Mike Szwed loved to play basketball whenever he could, sometimes even dragging his brothers out of bed to go play in the early morning hours.

However, when the 2008 Intramural basketball season began a little over a week after Szwed's tragic death from a ruptured spleen, the members of the Sigma Chi basketball team were playing with heavy hearts. The first games of the season for both of the fraternity's teams had been postponed to allow everyone to attend the viewing in his hometown of Naples and would resume the following week.

During this week, the brothers of Sigma Chi decided to remember Szwed by playing the game he loved. With Szwed in their hearts and minds, along with over 60 people packed in the Wellness Center gym, the Sigma Chi basketball team remembered and honored Mike Szwed with a resounding 51-40 win over Alpha Gamma Rho.

Junior Josh Kahl scored 30 points, including seven three-pointers, in a inspired effort, which he said, "was all for Szwed." Kahl's effort ignited the rest of the team to share his intensity and that proved to be too much for AGR to overcome. The crowd was made up of not only brothers of Sigma Chi, but also many sororities showed up to show their support, along with members of other fraternities as well as independents.

With this incredible outpouring of support, it proves that we all have the power to overcome what life throws at us and emerge victorious.
