On Saturday, March 8, the Florida Southern College baseball team got a little revenge on last year's NCAA champion and long-time rival University of Tampa Spartans. In a doubleheader, FSC won 7-5 and 4-3 victories, providing the third ranked team with two critical defeats.
To begin the day, junior pitcher Ken Wadsworth started, giving the team five solid innings of work. The Mocs broke out in a big way in the fourth inning, getting four runs off a deep home run by senior catcher David Golliner.
Junior pitcher Brad Davidson started the second game for the Mocs, providing the team with six solid innings. The stingy pitching by Davidson stifled the Spartans, only allowing them four singles until he was replaced by fellow junior Jeremy Thorne. After a single-shot home run by senior Arden McWilliams in the third inning, FSC captured a quick 3-0 lead.
The long shots didn't stop there, however, as Golliner delivered another shot of his own in the sixth inning off of Tampa starter Scott Chapman.
On Sunday, March 9, sophomore pitcher Stephen Batman flirted with history. In retiring every batter until the eighth inning, Batman was just one inning shy of completing a no-hitter. Up until Tampa's Ryan Williams stepped to the plate, the FSC pitcher had been flawless, issuing no walks. A double to right field brought his hopes for perfection to a close, however. After giving up his first hit of the day, Batman was clearly shaken up, tossing two wild pitches and allowing UT to tie the game at 1.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Spartans were able to claim the lead with a quick RBI single by Tampa's Jesus Barroso. FSC was unable to rally back in their half of the inning, falling to the defending champions 2-1.
FSC next plays Friday, March 21 at 7 pm against Florida Tech.
