Ever since September of last semester, the newly formed Sports Management Club of Florida Southern College has been working on an event to bring together the school of FSC, the Lakeland community, and those wishing to have a good laugh as well as to get together for a good cause.
The club is preparing to hold their first inaugural Jimmy V. Foundation charity basketball game to support cancer research.
The idea was initially brought up by club president Kelly Higgins and board member Victor Scarlata.
Throughout the young group's beginning, their main focus has been networking and marketing in order to give themselves real-world experience with event preparation.
With the charity game, the members decided to do something beneficial for and also for a good cause. Already, they have raised a total of $4,000 to go towards the Jimmy V. Foundation and cancer funds.
"We hope to have as much as $5,000 by the start of the game," Scarlata said.
Since its inception in 1993, the Jimmy Valvano Cancer Research Foundation has raised more than $70 million. With the motto "never give up," the Sports Management Club is using the game, giving all proceeds and previous donations directly to the Foundation. Of the $4,000 already received, Publix and Wachovia have been some of the more generous of providers.
The teams for the game will be made up of FSC faculty. They'll be going against noteworthy people from the Lakeland community.
"We're doing this for a good cause," Higgins said. "But we also want people to get out and have a good time. It'll be funny to see the teachers getting into the heat of the game."
Dr. Kerr will be coaching the FSC squad. Some key players include Dr. Bradford, Dr. Mike, Dr. Bythewood, Col. Hayduk, and Louis Webb.
They'll be facing Lakeland Commissioner Justin Troller, Sheriff Lance Fulse, Fire Fighter James Niblack, Rick Brown of The Ledger, and Kris Pahl as they represent the Lakeland team.
