Friends find Friday frisbee fitness fails

Florida Southern is a college that motivates its students to develop a healthy mind, body and spirit. Through various programs, FSC attempts to raise awareness of the positive effects of leading a healthy lifestyle. Most recently, the Campus-wide Wellness Initiative, implemented in Fall 2007, listed 10 concerns for student health and success. Among these concerns were physical fitness and stress management. Recently, a group of students have taken these concerns to heart and have started playing Ultimate Frisbee on Friday nights as a way to be outside, build community with other students, get exercise and blow off steam from the week. However, Florida Southern offers no open place for these students, or any students in general, to exercise outdoors. Is FSC really maximizing all options for students to be healthy on campus?
The Wellness Center is a great, state-of-the-art facility for students to use. The intramural gym is certainly big enough for students to play a wide number of sports. However, the Wellness Center closes at 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., depending on the night, leaving students to resort to other options if they choose to exercise on campus after this time of night. The gym is also indoors, which doesn't work for students who want a break from being indoors and a chance to get outside and get a fresh breath of air.
The intramural field would have previously been an excellent choice for a rousing game of Ultimate Frisbee, tag, or capture the flag in the evening. However, with the recent construction efforts of the school, the intramural field has been closed.
Intramural games have been played off-campus with large success but, without the intramural field in operating condition, there are no on-campus options for students to organize a game.
The members of the Ultimate Frisbee group that plays Friday nights have struggled to find a way to continue their late-night games. The soccer field, a perfect-sized space, is off-limits for the fact that the field needs to be in prime condition for the soccer teams to play on. Some of the students have proposed other suggestions, but these suggestions are not always usable.
