FSC values student input, suggestions
A Southern View
Issue date: 12/1/08 Section: Opinion
As the fall semester draws to a close, it seems only necessary to pause and reflect on the past four months at Florida Southern.
One thing has been increasingly evident so far this year; the college faculty and staff seem to be more and more interested in meeting the needs of students. We're not saying that the college was not making efforts to aid students in the past, in fact, that care and concern that the faculty and staff present is one of the primary reasons why some of us chose to enroll at FSC in the first place, but some of the changes that have occurred this year definitely reflect a general interest in student needs.
One obvious initiative on campus has been with the addition of the Student Solutions Center. By putting this system in place, students have found that it is even simpler to seek assistance in the departments of business and accounts, financial aid and academic support by walking in one door to friendly faces that are able to guide us down the hall to seek out the specific help that we need.
Our campus is already abounding with gardens and even though many students might argue that this campus has far more foliage than students. We cannot help but mention the Hollis Overlook Garden that was completed at the end of October. The garden offers a beautiful view of Lake Hollingsworth where students can relax to study or just sit to enjoy the weather. We are also impressed that this garden is fully sustainable with native plants and recycled materials that should make it much easier to maintain.
Even though it is definitely a topic that is over-discussed, it would be impossible to write about changes on campus that have met students' needs without mentioning changes to food service. The different meal plan that has been implemented shows a much more user-friendly approach. We can actually save up money on the plan to be able to purchase larger items such as cases of water without losing an entire day's worth of meals. Similarly, the Moc Mart has been amazing this semester.
They have brought in new items that are even more targeted for college students such as microwaveable meals and boxed cereal.
Wynee's Bistro has improved with an emphasis on healthier food, which is appreciated even though we do not always take advantage of those options as much as we should. We promise that this is the last time we will mention this, but although we do miss the trays in the Bistro, it is well worth the additional exercise to be able to benefit the environment and to support the school's efforts to go green.
Florida Southern College is continuing to make strides towards implementing student needs and has shown that the faculty, staff and administration here truly do value student input.
