The men's tennis team has had a strongstart with the new season just beginning. The team beat Webber International University 8-1 adding to their win against Saint Leo which they beat 9-0.
However, the win against Webber goes further than just another victory for head coach Trey Heath.
For Heath it became something personal because his father, Bill Heath, is the head coach for Webber.
"They understand that it means a lot to me," Heath said about the Mocs playing against his father's team.
Heath admits that there is a sense of competitiveness that surfaces on the courts when the teams play each other.
"I think that it was really interesting that he was facing his dad," freshman William Wold, tennis team member, said.
The players found the relationship between father and son interesting but said it was clear during the match that there was a very good relationship between both coaches.
So far the team's pre season has really paid off during the Webber game and has prepared them for their next match against Eckerd on Feb. 20.
Keeping that positive attitude, the team feels that they would be able to put up a good fight against Barry University, who they play Feb. 21.
"You have to allow them to make those mistakes," Heath said.
He was referring to some of the challenges that he has had to overcome with finding players to fill in the empty spots from losing his key players.
The diversity amongst the players has been a unique experience for everyone.
Junior Nicolas Bigler from Sweden and junior Roman Schirmaier from Germany both agree that the tennis program is very different here than their hometowns.
Bigler and Schirmaier have been given the opportunity to do the two most important things in their lives: go to school and play tennis.
As the season continues the Florida Southern men's tennis team is going to face challenging schools such as Lynn and Barry, while testing the abilities of each player.
