Florida Southern students, staff, faculty and alumni came together last week to participate in annual Founders Week celebrations and events.

While alumni gathered on the campus for homecoming and reunions, student teams participated in the Founders Week competition and attended events throughout the week.

The annual Founders Day Convocation on March 13 featured an address from Dr. G. Wayne Clough, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, who was then named the 75th honorary chancellor of FSC.

Three distinguished alumni were also honored at the convocation: Alumni Achievement Awards were presented to Lamar Louise Curry, class of 1927 and Lisa Kaiser Hickey of Lakeland, class of 1979; the Service to Florida Southern Award was presented to Robert Gordon Black, class of 1951.

Other highlights of the week included a tribute to military veterans on March 14, which honored FSC veterans and included an address from Army Lt. Gen. Francis Kearney, deputy commander of U.S. Southern Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa; a community street party and fireworks on March 13; the dedication of the new Evelyn and Warren Willis Garden of Meditation in the Hindu Garden on March 14; and Founders Ball, also on March 14.

About 175 students attended Founders Ball, where they dined - and danced - in style at Lake Mirror downtown and the results of the Founders Week competition and SGA elections were announced.

The new SGA executive board will consist of junior Corey Self as president, freshman Carrie Curry as executive vice president, freshman Adara Powell as vice president of academics, freshman Tonda Wooten as vice president of finance, junior Krystal Newman as vice president of Student Activities, sophomore Kristen Mauro as vice president of community and public relations and junior JennaLynn Halk as secretary.

The winners of the James Rogers and Agnes Johnson Rowe awards were also announced at Founders Ball. For the first time, an engaged couple won both of the awards: seniors Bryant Manning and Allison Mitchell.

Teams in the Founders Week competition participated in seven different events, and the first three places in each were awarded points. The theme for the week was "A Red Carpet Affair," and each team chose a celebrity couple to represent.
