The Student Government Association is the governing body at Florida Southern College, but what does SGA consist of and what does it really do?
SGA is made up of the Senate and executive board.
There was another component, a House made up of a representative for each recognized student organization. However, in the most recent SGA election, students voted to get rid of the House and have the presidents of each organization meet instead.
The Senate is comprised of seven people, each representing one of the seven major academic divisions: business and economics; education and physical education; fine, applied and performing arts; heath professionals; social and behavioral science; natural science and first-year or undeclared.
Also, all of the executive officers of SGA serve as members of the Senate.
According to the Florida Southern College website, SGA's mission statement is that they "strive to empower, communicate and promote unity through education and service in order to represent the student body. As members of the campus community, [they] are dedicated to developing relationships, facilitating changes, which benefit students and improving the quality of student life. [They] will accomplish these goals while upholding the values and integrity of our college."
During the past few weeks, FSC voted to select new executive members of SGA. The positions included president, executive vice president, vice president of academics, vice president of finance, vice president of student activities, vice president of community and public relations and secretary.
Recently elected to these positions was junior Cory Self, member of Lambda Chi Alpha, as president, freshman Carrie Currie as executive vice president, freshman Adara Powell as vice president of academics, freshman Tonda Wooten as vice president of finance, junior Krystal Newman as vice president of Student Activities, sophomore Kristen Mauro as vice president of community and public relations and junior JennaLynn Halk as secretary.
