"Watchmen"
Who will watch "Watchmen?" Hopefully, no one. Like other fans of comic book movies I highly anticipated the release of "Watchmen," not only for its cult style, but also for a chance for Frank Miller, director of "Sin City" and "300," a chance to redeem himself in my mind after the terrible film "The Spirit."
However, though the movie started with one of the coolest action sequences in recent memory and was followed by an opening credit sequence with Bob Dylan for music, the movie was garbage from there.
Before going to see the movie, my younger brother told me that the movie has gone through 11 producers. The movie certainly looked it.
A frail plot, awful character development and no explanation as to what made these superheroes greater than their peers - except for Dr. Manhattan- are just a few of the reasons why this movie was one of the worst films I've seen in a long time.
Don't get me wrong, there were some good things: a different spin on the comic book movie idea was welcomed. Also, a peek into a darker psyche of so called heroes was a very interesting plot twist. But it seemed like not one of those 11 producers seemed to agree on what plot line should be central, so they all had to share the near three hours of the film's duration.
Also, if you plan on seeing "Watchmen," plan on seeing more than a fair share of bright blue male nudity. For the first third of the movie, the character Dr. Manhattan, whose skin is blue, was always wearing his superhero Speedo®, or standing at an angle to keep a computer animator somewhere from creating his pelvic region. Then, suddenly, every other scene had a bright blue set of male genitalia.
I left the theater feeling disappointed and cheated. I give "Watchmen" 1 star out of 4, only because maybe in a few years a comic book movie will come out that reinvents the genre, except does it well.
