School spirit: let's spread it around
Issue date: 3/27/09 Section: Opinion
With the recent success of Florida Southern College's men's basketball team, The Southern editorial staff cannot help but notice an increase in school spirit.
We were pleased to see so many students out at the games cheering for the Mocs during the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. Even after the disappointing loss, students still rallied behind the team.
However, we would like to see more school spirit for different teams. If FSC is going to rally behind one team, we should rally behind them all.
School spirit should not be limited to just the winning teams or the popular ones.
To start with, by sheer numbers alone, more students watch the men's teams than the women's teams. The women's teams have just as much talent and deserve just as much support as the men's. Students should support them too.
We acknowledge that the women's volleyball team gets a lot of support, but then again, there is no men's volleyball.
And then there are the golf teams, cross country/track teams, swim teams and tennis teams-none of which get massive crowd turnouts or support.
We would love to see more students cheering for these teams. They have had great success too, and the athletes on these teams train just as hard as athletes on the popular teams. Let's support them too.
School spirit should also exist outside of the courts and fields. We acknowledge that some students wear red on Fridays, but the sidewalks and classrooms are definitely not filled with seas of red and students wearing FSC clothes.
How many students know FSC's "Alma Matter"? Most students could care less about the orange groves that o'erspread the campus, or hailing to Florida Southern.
And then there are the students who complain about FSC but continue to go here. Have some pride in the school you attend or transfer. School pride should go hand in hand with school spirit. Complaining does not do much anyway.
Overall, we would like to commend the students for the school spirit that we have already seen on campus. However, we would love to see much more Moc Pride.
We would also like to congratulate all the sports teams for their hard work and success.
M-O-C-S, Go Mocs Go!
