Over the summer, the staff members of the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center worked to create a centralized vision of awareness. New and returning students can look forward to the changes set in place.

A new addition to the Wellness Center is the Recreation Room. The room is next to the cafeteria, where Wachovia used to be located in the past.

The Rec. Room is a new incentive to create awareness about the availability of outdoor recreational gear.

"There's a stronger focus on recreation this year and creating more opportunities for a variety of programs," said Kelly Andrews, assistant dean of wellness.

Students can check out gear in the Rec. Room daily from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Outdoor recreation has also added new trip options. These include a fishing trip, beach day and camping at Disney's Fort Wilderness for fall break.

The Wellness Center has introduced water ski clinics. If any student wants to learn how to ski on the campus' waterfront, the cost of the clinic is $15 ($10 for insurance and $5 for a 15 minute water pull).

There are two clinics per semester. This semester's dates are Oct. 7 and Nov. 4, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The spring clinics are March 10 and 31, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Along with the new intramural coordinator, Alicia Slone, also comes a stronger focus on intramural sports. There is now 4x4 flag football and game of the week. For the latter introduction, two teams will be chosen from a drawing to receive free prizes and gift certificates.

Healthy Campus Coalition now falls under the Wellness Center. Straight Talk is the new streamline.

"Straight Talk is about creating awareness and we want to keep it consistent so it's easier for students to know when programs are," Andrews said.

Straight Talk meets Thursdays 8 p.m.-10 p.m. in the Life and Cultural Center. For the second Thursday of the month, the group will meet in Rogers Auditorium for their larger programs. This month is sex talk with Cathy. Next month is Take Back the Night, the domestic violence program.

Wellness TV and Student Health 101 has also undergone changes.

Wellness TV will have more connected packages concerning Straight Talk and what's in Student Health 101. It will be more of news broadcast show that ties wellness programs together. Episodes will air biweekly on Mondays. They can be found on the HCC Facebook Group Page, iTunes (subscribe to "Wellness TV @ FSC" podcast), FSC HCC Web Page, Wellness Center TV and on the Campus Channel 96.

The Student Health magazine will have more custom pages concerning campus events. It will also have additional video links from the Wellness Center. The magazine is emailed to students.

Moreover, students can look forward to stress-free zones. Last year massages were given to students in the gym.

This year there is an educational component added about stress reduction. Massages will resume outside Wynee's Bistro and the Rec. Room. Look for this new program mid-semester.
