Florida Southern's talented will show what they are made of Sept. 26. Inspired by the hit television shows "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent," Student Goernment Assocation and co-sponsors, Lambda Chi Alpha and Kappa Delta, will be hosting the third annual Southern's Got Talent.
"We hope to duplicate Dan Rindt's success and add in a few new things," said Corey Self, president of the Student Government Association, "I believe it will be a great show."
Dan Rindt was the SGA president 2006-2008 who had been a player in the beginning days of the event.
To organize the event, months were spent brainstorming ideas to make the event a greater success than the previous two years. Once ideas began coming together, there was a month and a half of organized planning and scheduling.
While Southern's Got Talent is free to attend, both Lambda Chi Alpha and Kappa Delta will be accepting donations at the door in order to benefit their local philanthropies. Kappa Delta will suggest a $3 donation to benefit Prevent Chlid Abuse America and Lamba Chi Alpha recommends a donation of canned food for the North American Food Drive. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Branscomb.
Audience members will be eligible for several raffle prizes throughout the show.
This FSC tradition is open to all students and staff members who wish to compete. There are no set requirements in order to participate. Packets for participation were available at the front desk in the bandshell through Sept. 25.
"Participants needed to turn in their content," said Self. "We needed to know the lyrics to make sure they were Florida Southern worthy."
Southern's Got Talent will see the return of Southern's Best Dance Crew as well as numerous new acts. Southern's Best Dance Crew was a dance team of four men that took first place in the event last year. Many contestants will perform musical talents. Some of the performers will showcase their original pieces while others will show their take on previously recognized pieces.
Throughout the show, a panel of select judges will select winners based on a set rubric. By the end of the event, there will be winners designated for each performing category as well as an overall winner.
"The winners will receive a very special prize," Self said. Unwilling to reveal more information, Self expects participants and audience members will be anxious to discover what the winning prize is.
SGA, Kappa Delta and Lambda Chi Alpha expect a great turnout for the event.
Audience members from previous shows vouch for the performer's talents and the entertaining atmosphere.
"I was really impressed with the turnout last year," said Melissa Wilburn, sophomore at FSC. "It was ridiculously fun."
