Aspiring scholar, Ashlea Archer, reflects on her adventures from little island life to a future in the medical field.

Archer is a senior biology major who hopes to get in medical school and become a doctor. Originally from the Bahamas, Archer moved to the U.S. for the first time her freshman year.

"I have always wanted to be a doctor and I always knew I had to go college," Archer. said. "I had to take a chance and it was a really good decision. I am a little island girl living in America and going to school."

Archer's mother is American, so her family traveled a lot back and forth to Chicago. Archer recalled that one of the strangest things she experienced was driving on the other side of the road.

Archer described her life back home on Abaco Island as amazing.

"It is a lot different from here," Archer said. "Some people walk around barefoot. It is really laid back. I think I took for granted how peaceful it is."

Archer said many people she has encountered have preconceived notions about island life.

"They ask if we wear clothes and have plumbing. And I say that we have advanced in the past few years," Archer said.

Archer said that her college experience could be best described as very adventurous.

"It is been a lot of risk taking, but I am enjoying the adventure," Archer said. "Life is way too exciting to be involved in just one thing. I am a science major, but I love to sing and I love to dance, so I do that too."

Archer is a member of Tri Beta and American Chemical Society, vice president for ODK and a former vice president and current worship leader for Upper Room Ministries. Archer volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and even went to Mississippi to assist with relief efforts.

Also, Archer is student member of the transformation curriculum committee and student representative for faculty selection.

"It is interesting to be on the other side of the interview process. I see qualities in people I would not notice otherwise," Archer said.

Archer is taking a photography class in the art department and myth and legend in the English department.

"I am an over-achiever so I have dabbled in every single thing."
