Florida Sothern College's Greek community unites Feb. 5 to help disaster relief in Haiti.
When the 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti Jan.12, many people were severely injured and killed. Haiti's government confirmed the death toll to be more than 27,000 last week and other expert's estimate as high as 200,000.
The U.S Geological Survey figures Haiti's earthquake to be among the 10 deadliest of the last century. Survivors are still being discovered in the rubble and more then 120 people have been rescued.
According to CNN three million people, nearly a third of Haitian population are still in need of food, water, shelter and medical assistance.
The Greek community will put together baskets filled with items that will help meet some of these needs. Each sorority will be responsible for collecting a specific item.
Alpha Delta Pi is providing hand towels, Alpha Chi Omega is providing toothbrushes, Alpha Omicron Pi is providing wash clothes, Delta Sigma Theta is providing hairbrushes, Kappa Delta is providing nail clippers, Zeta Tau Alpha is providing bars of soap, and Pahnhellenic is providing band-aids.
Jenn Hilmer, the president of Zeta Tau Alpha came up with this idea and is very excited to help out the Haitian community.
"I'm very excited about this opportunity to help out," Hilmer said. "Lauri Tenney, who works for campus ministries contacted me and told me about the basket making, then I contacted the other sororities."
Hilmer believes this will strengthen the Greek community and soften the tension between sororities.
"Its great to unite ourselves together under one cause, it really makes us step back from petty competitions and realizes that there are more important things in the world," Hilmer said.
Emily Yehia, the president of Panhellenic, is hoping to get enough supplies to make over 100 baskets.
"I know all the sororities are excited to help and I'm hoping that we can get enough supplies to really make an impact on the Haitian community." Yehia said.
The FSC sorority presidents will meet on Monday to count the collected supplies.
